🍁 Caring for women with substance use disorders in jail requires a comprehensive and compassionate approach.🍁 It involves providing access to specialized addiction treatment programs tailored to their unique needs and circumstances. 🍁 Additionally, mental health support, counseling services, and vocational training can empower these women to address underlying issues. 🍁 Recognizing the intersectionality of factors contributing to their substance use and ensuring trauma-informed care are essential components of a holistic approach to supporting these individuals during their incarceration.Thumbs up for ISSUP - International Society of Substance Use Professionals for taking this initiative.#mentalhealthmatters #womenempowerment #addictionrecovery

Join us for an insightful – and rarely had – discussion to explore how we can eliminate stigma and barriers for neurodivergent offenders who are starting businesses, and support them to discover the joy, meaning, and connection that comes from entrepreneurship. Everyone, regardless of their background, deserves a chance to find their light and follow their heart. At any given moment, any one of us may find ourselves in a situation where mistakes are made and a second chance is needed.Neurodivergent individuals are disproportionately represented in the criminal justice system, as highlighted in a report by the Chief Inspector of Prisons on Neurodiversity in the Criminal Justice System (Neurodiversity in the Criminal Justice System, 2021). According to the report, approximately half the individuals entering prisons are likely to have some form of neurodivergence.Several reasons contribute to the overrepresentation of neurodivergent people in the criminal justice system – primarily, the inaccessibility of our society. Our world is not designed for neurodivergent individuals, often resulting in experiences such as hypersensitivity to emotions and communication differences being misinterpreted in the worst possible way. Additionally, a perceived lack of opportunities can create a sense of desperation, pushing individuals towards unfortunate situations. As a society, it is crucial that we recognise the inherent value within each one of us and the role we can all play in creating a society of belonging, empowerment, and connection. For our next roundtable, Joyfully Different Co-Founder and former Civilian Police Adviser Mark Blake will be joined by Phil Ashford MBA, Director of Supersonic Startup, to lead an important discussion about how we can move beyond labels and stigma to empower neurodivergent offenders in the world of business. It’s estimated that between 50-85% of prisoners in the UK are neurodivergent. Let that sink in.I’m honoured to be facilitating this vital discussion with Mark Blake and Phil Ashford MBA for Joyfully Different this month. This is SUCH an important conversation to have if you are an advocate for neurodivergent people, and both Mark and Phil have done incredible work to advocate for and support neurodivergent folks within the criminal justice system. #Neurodiversity #Neurodivergent #Neurodivergent #Prisons #JusticeSystem

While incarcerated men outnumber women in the U.S., the challenges women face within the criminal justice system are distinct and often under-addressed. The Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ) released a report, "Women's Justice: A Preliminary Assessment of Women in the Criminal Justice System," highlighting these disparities.Key Findings:▶️ Childhood trauma: Over 90% of women involved in the system have experienced some form of childhood trauma, such as physical or sexual abuse. This trauma can significantly influence a woman's pathway to incarceration.▶️ Mental health needs: Women in the system are more likely to experience mental health issues like depression and anxiety compared to men. These needs often go unmet due to a lack of adequate resources.▶️ Sentencing disparities: While women commit fewer crimes overall, they may receive harsher sentences, particularly for nonviolent offenses.▶️ Inadequate programming: Prisons and jails often lack specialized programs tailored to address the unique needs of women, such as parenting support or re-entry programs. The CCJ report shines a spotlight on the urgent need for systemic changes to address the unique challenges faced by women in the criminal justice system.#AKInvestigations #Justice #WomensJustice #CriminalJusticeReform #TraumaInformedCare #MentalHealth #SentencingReform #Reentry

The formal legislative session ends in just 22 days on July 31st! Even if you have already written your State Representative, pleasetake three minutes and reach out again! The single most helpful thing we can do to bring the I AM Bill to a vote is use our voice as constituents to talk toour ownState Representativeshow important the I AM Bill is to us personally, and urge them to talk to House leadership about bringing the I AM Bill bill to a vote. No one should have to choose between food, a roof over their head, their education, and access to menstrual products and yet every day in Massachusetts, menstruators are forced to make exactly that choice.Meanwhile,at least 12 states and DC provide free products in schools, 25 states and DC provide free menstrual products in correctional facilities and 3 states provide free menstrual products in homeless shelters. (National Conference of State Legislatures). (S.2491/H.534) An Act to Increase Access to Menstrual Products in Prisons, Homeless Shelters and Public Schools, the 'I AM bill', would ensure access to free menstrual products, without stigma, to all menstruating individuals in Massachusetts public schools, homeless shelters, and prisons.#periodpoverty #actnow #IamBillMassachusetts National Organization for Women (Mass NOW)
