Things to Consider Before Adopting from the ASPCA

  • You must be 18 years of age or older to adopt.

  • Adoptions are conducted through a combination of virtual (video) and in-person meet-and-greets. Our Admissions and Placement Specialists will tell you more about our adoption process if they determine that you and the pet you applied for are a good fit. Applying for a pet online does not secure a hold for that dog or cat, and we cannot guarantee that they are available unless you are contacted directly for a meet-and-greet.

  • Adopters are required to provide a non-expired government issued photo ID with date of birth (e.g., Driver’s License, State Identification Card, Passport, etc.); in some cases, a separate proof of current address may be required (such as a lease or a telephone, utility or cable bill) and we recommend adopters have this available. You will also be asked to provide the names for each member of the household over the age of 18.

  • All adopted cats and kittens are required to go home in a secure pet carrier. You may either bring your own carrier with you or one can be purchased at the time of adoption.

  • Clients interested in adoption should consider how to transport their new pet home at the time of adoption. Public transportation may not be appropriate for most dogs, and possibly some cats.

  • The suggested adoption fee is $150 for all animals. For adopters who live within the five boroughs: Please note that a mandatory fee of $8.50 will be added to dog adoptions to cover the cost of the NYC dog license.

  • Be sure to check your building’s policy relevant to pet ownership to avoid any landlord concerns.

  • Walk-ins: Please note that our team will be assisting both scheduled and walk-in adoptions during our business hours and the wait time for walk-ins may be more than one hour.
