We have advised Sumitomo Chemical on its sale of 22.5 per cent of the shares in Saudi exchange-listed Petro Rabigh to Saudi Aramco. The parties also agreed to other joint measures to improve Petro Rabigh’s balance sheet and cash liquidity. Following the sale, Sumitomo Chemical will continue to own 15 per cent of the shares of Petro Rabigh. Closing is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory and other third-party approvals. We have represented a survivor of modern slavery on a pro bono basis in a successful appeal to the First-Tier Tribunal (Social Entitlement Chamber) challenging a decision of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA), resulting in one of the largest UK criminal injuries compensation awards for a modern slavery survivor.After a 26-year period of enslavement, the client (Mr A) applied for compensation from the CICA, a public body that compensates victims of violent crimes in Great Britain. In 2020 the application was rejected, which is when we began representing Mr A, initially in a request for a review of the CICA's decision, and then in a necessary appeal to the First-Tier Tribunal.The Tribunal awarded Mr A over £352,000 as compensation for all Mr A’s injuries and his past and future loss of earnings resulting from that. According to the charity Anti Trafficking and Labour Exploitation Unit (ATLEU), the award represents one of the highest amounts of compensation to have been awarded to a survivor of modern slavery under the CICA’s Scheme.Our pro bono team comprised partner Christopher Stothers, associate Liam Symonds, and trainee Wannisa Johnston, as well as legal solutions specialist Adil Khan, former partner Jane Jenkins, former senior associate Vanessa Medina and former paralegal Hannah V.
